MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – June 30, 2015 Frost & Sullivan’s Manufacturing Leadership Council, the global business network for senior industrial executives, today announced the election of Industry 4.0 pioneer Prof. Dr. Detlef Zühlke, Chairman of the German SmartFactory Technology Initiative, and Dr. Dean Bartles, Executive Director of the U.S. Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII), to the Manufacturing Leadership Council’s Board of Governors.

In a unanimous vote, the Board of Governors, which steers the Manufacturing Leadership Council, approved the nominations earlier this month. With these appointments, the Board of Governors now includes 19 members from organizations such as Ford Motor Company, Lockheed Martin, UCLA, MIT, Campbell Soup, Lexmark International, Tata Motors in India, Dell Computer, Cisco Systems and the University of Cambridge Institute for Manufacturing in the U.K.

“We are delighted to welcome Prof. Dr. Detlef Zühlke and Dr. Dean Bartles to the Board of Governors,” said David R. Brousell, Global Vice President of Research and Editorial Director of the Manufacturing Leadership Council. “Their expert insights and deep understanding of digital innovation, the emerging industrial Internet of Things, and the challenges that accompany the vision of Manufacturing 4.0 for the future of our industry will be a great asset to the Board in its continued research and exploration of the critical issues facing manufacturing companies worldwide.”

“Industry 4.0 has developed as an internationally acknowledged vision for future production,” said Prof. Dr. Detlef Zühlke, Founding Chairman of the SmartFactory Technology Initiative in Germany and Scientific Director of Innovative Factory Systems at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Kaiserslautern. “But we will only be successful bringing this vision into reality when the leading nations in factory automation cooperate internationally. We need a common understanding of the challenges our industries face and discuss actions to be competitive on the world market. I am most happy to join the Board of Governors of the Manufacturing Leadership Council and actively participate in developing our journey towards Manufacturing 4.0.”

“The Manufacturing Leadership Council represents a significant group of thought leaders in manufacturing organizations across the globe,” said Dr. Dean Bartles, Executive Director of the U.S. Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII), Chief Manufacturing Officer at UI Labs, and 2014 winner of the Manufacturing Leadership Council’s Manufacturing Leader of the Year Award. “The annual Summit is one of my favourite events each year that I always look forward to attending and I never travel without at least the most recent copy of the Manufacturing Leadership Journal in my briefcase. I am honoured to join the elite group of executives that make up the Manufacturing Leadership Council’s Board of Governors and look forward to the collaborative interactions that lie ahead.”
